Susan Marie (Atkins) Smith

Susan Marie (Atkins) Smith, of Adelphi, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 10, 2025 after a courageous five year battle with cancer. Her battle included stage 4 lymphoma, which she overcame, then a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis, which led to bone cancer. She was born on December 27, 1953, in Chillicothe, the daughter of the late Arliss Peyton and Audrey (Bates) Atkins.

Susan is survived by her loving husband of almost 16 years, James M. "Skeeter" Smith; children, Fred (Jordance) Yingling, David Yingling, and Sara Yingling; grandchildren, Dalton Thurston, Nadia, Sophia, Lucca, Laneah, and Landon Yingling; sisters, Pamela Shields and Jill Newland; father-in-law and mother-in-law, James "Jim" and Helen Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, "Chipper" and Dena Smith; several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and two special uncles; and numerous other family members and friends whom she cherished.

Susan graduated from Xenia High School Class of 1972 and retired from Chillicothe City Schools. She was a member of Eagles #600, American Legion Post 62, VFW #108, and AMVETS #4. Susan loved horses and the ocean. Although her favorite pastime was attending her grandchildren's sporting events/activities and spending time with family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Summit Cemetery, Adelphi, with Thomas Breeden officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the HILL FUNERAL HOME, Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Susan's honor to Adena Cancer Center or National Church Residences Hospice.
