John Philemon Karshner
John Philemon Karshner, 82, of Adelphi passed away Oct. 14, 2011. He was born June 14, 1929 in Adelphi to the late Marie Redfern Karshner Jones and Philemon Swinehart Karshner. He married his wife, Donna Pritchard Karshner, on April 9, 1948 in Greenville, S.C. They enjoyed 63 years together. They had five children and John was preceded in death by his oldest son, John Philemon Karshner II. He is survived by his sons, Norman K. Karshner of Laurelville, Philemon N. (Andria) Karshner of Seymour, IN., C. Victor Karshner of Laurelville; daughter, Teresa J. Sulzer of Laurelville; brother, David (Joyce) Jones of Lancaster; sister, Dr. Mary Ann Jones of N.Y.; eight grandchildren; Kelly Karshner, Katie Karshner, Jason Wiseman, Justin Wiseman, Jared Karshner, Jessie Karshner, Kristina Karshner, and Alex Karshner; two great-grandchildren, Leah and Madelyn Wiseman; brother-in-laws, Charles (Sharon) Pritchard, and David Pritchard, sister-in-law, Marjorie Heckler, many nieces, nephews, and special Uncle, Norman Schrader. He was also preceded in death by a special father-in-law, Charles S. Pritchard.
John was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, Georgia. After graduation he spent the summer as a Fire Warden at Mount Rainer National Park in Washington. He attended the Ohio State University majoring in geology and also worked at Battelle in Research. He served with the United States Marine Corps Reserve, VMS-244 as Communications Officer during the Korean War. He then went on to the Colorado School of Mines and finished at the University of New Mexico. From 1954 to 1960 he served as Deputy Sheriff for Ross County and also served as Chief of Police in Adelphi from 1957 to 1959 and also served again from 1976-1984.
In 1961, John and his wife Donna founded and operated KNIX FM Stereo Radio Station in Phoenix, Arizona. KNIX is currently ranked as number one in the U.S. In 1968 he returned to the family cattle farm in Ohio. He was the owner and operator of Cycle Trails Motosports Park promoting national and international races. Upon retirement John and Donna enjoyed many around the world travels from Antarctica to Europe and Hawaii. John really loved and enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved to entertain them with his story telling. He will be sadly missed by all that loved and knew him.
Funeral services will be Tuesday 2:30 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, Kingston with Rev. Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Summit cemetery. Friends may call at Hill's Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. till the hour of service.
