Obituary

John D. "Jack" Greenwalt

John D. "Jack" Greenwalt, 86, of Chillicothe, concluded his lifelong dedication to his community when he passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, July 28, 2024. Surrounded by the family he adored, Jack's departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.

Born to George and Harriott (Armbruster) on April 18, 1938, in Chillicothe, Jack was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Robert Greenwalt and Jean Dumm. His life was a testament to love and devotion, most profoundly exemplified by his nearly 68-year marriage to Viola A. (Chester), his steadfast partner and the love of his life.

Jack's legacy lives on through his sons, David (Cherie) and Denis (Glenda), and his cherished grandchildren, Britany (Chandra), Austin "A.J." (Harley), Shay (Aubrianna), Madison (Triston), Shad, and Gunnar (Kylie). His great-grandchildren, Deghan, Kace, Chandler, Adaline, and Raven, brought endless joy to his life. Jack's family was his world, and he found immense happiness in their company and at their various events. He also leaves behind a circle of dear friends whom he considered family.

The year 1956 was pivotal for Jack, marking the beginning of many of his lifelong commitments. After graduating from Centralia High School, he embarked on a 43-year career at Mead Paper Company, where he worked as a millwright in the Maintenance department until his retirement in 1999. Jack's work ethic and kindness earned him countless friends over the years. On September 30, 1956, Jack married Viola, starting a family that would become the cornerstone of his life. That same year, he began his dedicated service with the Green Twp. Fire Department. His commitment to fire and emergency services spanned decades, impacting countless lives in the township and beyond. Jack rarely missed a monthly fire meeting and remained an active member of the department and the Ross County Fire & Rescue Association until his passing. He was honored in 2018 by the county with the Mike Strawser Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of service.

Jack's dedication extended to the Zane Trace School District, where he served for 24 ½ years on the school board, often as its Board president. From 1988 to 2009 and again from 2014 to 2018, he served the students and families of our area. He was a constant presence at Zane Trace events, almost always accompanied by his dear friend, Pete Dunkle, whether that was in the concession stand, working an event, or just simply being a presence in the stands. He was recognized in 2017 by the Ohio School Board Association for his dedication to the school board.

Jack Greenwalt's life was a testament to unwavering love, dedication, and service. His memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him and there will never be another like him.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jesudoss and his entire care team for their unwavering commitment to Jack over the years. You were truly a physician AND friend to him.

Friends and community members are invited to pay their respects on Friday, August 2, at the Zane Trace High School Gymnasium from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3, at 11 a.m. at the HILL FUNERAL HOME in Kingston, officiated by Jack's dear friend, Reverend Barry Bennett.
